2-7-2014 It snowed tonight

I really enjoyed watching the Opening Ceremonies of the Sochi Olympics. After they were over I stepped out on the porch and everything was covered in snow.

I decided to go walk the campus because I knew it would be beautiful and I was not disappointed. All photos taken with Fuji X100s and processed with Snapseed on my iPad.

HDR

I stink at doing HDR images. But this year, I am trying to improve my processing abilities so here you go with 3 HDR versions of the Admin Building in snow with the sun setting.

School Closing Snow

While I was shooting this photo on Monday the University closed. Got this photo with my Canon G11 P&S camera. The original raw file has very little color but I much prefer it with a sepia tone. Hence another desktop image is created.

Snowman

Jamie,Josie,Jackson,Jalen and I built a snowman today. The snow yesterday was too powdery. The snow that fell last night was very wet and perfect for a snowman. Later this afternoon Josie built her own snowman beside the family snowman. We had fun and memories were made. I hope someday they will build snowmen with their kids and think back to the fun we had today.

I don't really remember building a snowman as a kid but I remember the snowy morning my Dad came home with a brand new sled. We lived at the bottom of a huge hill and man did we give that sled a workout. I remember getting our go-kart out in the snow and having a big time with it as well.

Maybe my most fond snow memory comes from being with my Grandad. Every year he would set out a number of rabbit boxes in the winter. When it was cold the rabbits would go in the box for warmth and the trap door woulld close and we would find them the next morning and then we would have rabbit to eat. I guess it was the lazy mans way of rabbit hunting. One morning it had snowed a good bit and Grandaddy wouldn't go check the boxes with me. I bundled up grabbed my bb gun and headed out. We didn't get any rabbits. Checking the boxes was just not as fun by myself so I tripped one of the boxes and went home and convinced my Grandad we had a rabbit. I think he suspected I was not telling the truth but he got up and bundled up and went out with me. We hiked over to the box and and as he knelt down and saw that it was empty he grabbed a snowball and pelted me with it. We had a snowball fight all the way back to the house. The next morning he decided that he better just go with me to check the rabbit boxes. I never really remember catching too many rabbits but I always had fun checking those boxes with my Grandad.

Snow

I don't think it is fair for it to snow during Spring Break. I am home today with the kids and we got about 1.5 inches of snow last night. Jalen, Jackson, Josie and Jamie went out and played for a bit while while I made breakfast. I made grits and hot chocolate to warm them up. Instead of using the hot chocolate mix from the store I made the recipe off the side of the Hersheys Coco Box. I remember my dad would make hot chocolate that way sometimes. Made with coco, sugar, milk and real vanilla is just a ton better than a powdered mix from Carnation. Dad would also collect fresh snow and mix in sugar and vanilla and make snow cream. I need to find out the recipe for that. We need a lot more snow to make snow cream. After breakfast, we went out and made a small snowman in the back yard. You would think that as a photographer I would have cameras with me. All of my cameras were at the office except my 1950s Kodak Signet 35 that is loaded with B&W film and of course my trusty cell phone camera.
