Vivian Maier shot her everyday life. That is the idea of this project and I always do this project as well. Here is my album for the fall of 2020.

Jeff's Photoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12331131127732641167noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9083114.post-17302727196164924962020-08-14T11:47:00.003-05:002020-08-14T16:09:41.868-05:00Jimmy Allen

This is the first photo I could find that I took of Jimmy Allen.

It was from a Bible Department faculty photo shoot. I had just come back from a Santa Fe Photo workshop in 1994 where I had taken a studio lighting class. I had a Speedotron Blackline pack with two lights. I remember setting this background up in the classroom across from the Bible offices and everyone came for photos.

I went and to Dr. Allen's funeral on Tuesday and it was a wonderful service. This photo shows his daughter Cindy making remarks about his life. Her brothers also made comments along with former Harding Bible dept chair Jerry Jones.

I never took a Jimmy Allen bible class. I did always enjoy when he would preach at College Church. He and Neale Pryor would switch between who took the spring meeting and who took the fall meeting.

I remember taking a conditioning class with Coach Richmond in the spring of 1990 and we would run laps on the indoor track at the Ganus Athletic Center. Dr. Allen would usually be there playing basketball with the HSBS ( Harding School of Biblical Studies) students.

I loved running into him on campus. I remember seeing him at the post office and he was trying to convince Virginia Bradley that he got a preachers discount on postage. Once while going somewhere with Tom and one of the girls in the office I saw him leaving the post office and stopped abruptly holding out my arms and said alert, alert....dinasour spotted. Tom froze like something terrible was about to happen. Dr. Allen grabbed me and acted like he was roughing me up all the time talking about how tough I was running my mouth.

The above photo was from his retirement reception. It always struck me how he would call Dr. Ganus by his first name. There was no disrespect, they were next-door neighbors and friends for many years. Still, when I think about it I don't know many people who called Dr. Ganus, Cliff.

I get the same feelings when I accidentally call Dr. McLarty, Bruce. The McLartys moved to Searcy in 1991 to preach at College Church. That was the same year I started working for Harding. He was my preacher and I learned his name and appropriately called him by his first name. When he was announced as the next HU President following Dr.Burks, I remember thinking out loud in a meeting what we should call him and Mr. Crouch immediately said " you should call him Dr. McLarty." Still, Bruce slips out sometimes. This past Wednesday night at the Elders meeting Dr. McLarty was doing the devotional for the meeting. During the pre-meeting minutes as everyone was getting connected to the Zoom meeting, Dr. McLarty was talking about how the internet was down at his house and his office and he had finally gotten connected with his wife's phone. He then said something about putting us to sleep with his Devo and I piped in and said "Bruce, you have been putting the Montgomery kids to sleep at church for years." It slipped out, I called him Bruce. No offense was meant or taken but again there was that uncomfortable feeling of calling him Bruce.

This was the last photo I took of Jimmy Allen. It was during the 2014 Lectureship. He was given a Lifetime Preaching Award.

I would occasionally see him walking across the lawn where the Old Married or East Married apartments used to be. He was taking care of Mrs. Allen and he would just need a break to get out and walk. Anytime I saw him I would go and walk with him. He always had something on his mind or would tell me who he had talked to on the phone that day and about the work they were doing somewhere. Whenever we parted ways he would always stop and look me in the eye and say "Son, I know about the work you are doing in the jail. I am proud of you and I am praying for you." Those are words that have kept me going at times when things at the jail were hard.

I just pulled his book Re-Baptism off my shelf. I have never read it before and I decided this week would be a good time.

Another family memory for me was taking this photo of Mike Allen playing club football. It was in the fall of 1988. I was a freshman photographer working for Leslie Downs at the Petit Jean. I vividly remember getting this photo. Back in those days of manual focus, I was really happy to see that I got it in focus. I didn't have many photos in that yearbook but I sure was proud of this one.

Three Jimmy Allen Sermons from YouTube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRTq2wB8vwA&feature=youtu.be

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuPwhtZDDZg&feature=youtu.be

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-vkFCXTNqI&feature=youtu.be

Jeff's Photoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12331131127732641167noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9083114.post-66507541635580524832020-08-12T17:24:00.001-05:002020-08-14T10:54:44.670-05:00Road Trip

Since March, I have been using my Fuji X100s to document my life through the Covid-19 pandemic. During this time I have watched lots of YouTube videos and I really liked the #StayHomeWithLeica series.

Well known Leica photographers talked about their images. Some of the discussion was about cameras and lenses but really it was about the work. I have always thought having a Leica would be amazing but they are way too rich for my blood and I have the Fuji that looks like a Leica. I have enjoyed the process.

This past Sunday we did a road trip to Memphis to see Linda and also to visit Jenna and Colby. Linda needed some things done and of course, the boys have to use the lawnmowers. We had a good visit.

We went on to see Jenna and Colby. We met at Jenna's school and got to see her new classroom. We stopped by their house and got to see Poppy and Luna. Luna is Oliva and Thomas Stafford's dog. Jenna and Colby were keeping Luna while Oliva and Thomas were in Alabama visiting Aaron and his new baby.

I like doing this kind of everyday work. If you looked at my social media you would think I only shot flowers and that is just not true.

For this trip I used the optical viewfinder to really try to appreciate the Leica experience. I hope you enjoy the photos.

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BauRRL2JOdg/XzRn5eY72iI/AAAAAAABbnw/1RdWc1gciwkZPGxhHY23kE8U9WGsjY6XQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2000/08-09-2020-2530.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; White hydrangeas in front of Dr. and Mrs England’s house. I took this photo because lately I have seen several photos that were beautiful but didn’t really have a subject. I feel like this is a good scene but no real subject. I would never let my students get away with that but I am trying it out. Sure you could say the flowers were the subject but I don’t want my students to be lazy. I really want a stronger subject.

This semester is like nothing I have ever experienced. Covid-19 (coronavirus) took away the second half of the semester. We went to online learning. That was not a huge hurdle for me as my classes have been using Google Photos and Google Classroom for years. I did have to figure out Zoom meetings and how to lecture to a video camera. Zoom classes are a poor substitution to the real thing. In the spring semester, because of the winter weather, I lecture pretty heavy until March and then we start doing class photo walks. We did one class photo walk the week before spring break. My class did the rest of their assignments by themselves at home in quarantine. They did a good job but it was not the same. You run out of stuff to photograph at home. You run out of people to photograph. Every year one of the main assignments is the Vivian Maier project where they have to take 600 photos of just everyday life. Then they have to pull out their 100 best photos. This year I dropped the number to 450 and then dropped it to 300. I made them pick out their 75 best photos to caption. It is strange to look at my VM project. The first half is pretty straightforward but after spring break you can tell something happened. Lots more photos from home and way too many flower photos. It is just what I had to work with. I actually made a Covid-19 photo folder for these times and I also made a Covid-19 email folder that I kept all the school announcements in and other strange emails that I want to use to remember this time. I am glad that we did what we needed to do to stay safe. I am really sorry that I didn't get to know my Spring class as well as I normally would. I am praying that things will be better and that we will have a much more normal fall semester.

I was inspired to blog again by a Kathy Dillion blog post on the HU Center for Teaching and Learning blog. For the last year or so I have been writing in a journal and I really have enjoyed that. I really like this format but it seems to take more time and effort and I don't really enjoy the layout parts of the blogging process. However, I have blogged off and on for a really long time to I guess I need to pick it up again and see if I can make it a habit again. I am thankful for Kathy's inspiration and I am thankful for the journey I had with my Spring 2020 class of photographers.Jeff's Photoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12331131127732641167noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9083114.post-89739306104162197372020-01-22T13:27:00.003-06:002020-01-22T13:29:36.387-06:00Jalen and Harding Academy are Football State Champions

Jalen and his football team are State Champions. They went 15-0. I am so proud of Jalen and this team. They have set a standard of excellence and at times restraint that will long be remembered. We mercy-ruled so many teams this year that the starters rarely played in the second half. It has been hard to watch the second and third-string play and not be able to score because we don't run the score up after the mercy rule is in effect. The final game was played in Little Rock at War Memorial Stadium. I enjoyed shooting the game with Josie on the sidelines with me. Having Jenna and Colby and Dad together for the night was also extra special. We also had Matt Roberts and his fiance, Amber Sherrill.

Last night, while I was at the jail for jail ministry, I get a text from Jenna asking if I could fix this photo. Having a dad that is a professional photographer has its perks.

I popped the photo in Snapseed on my iPhone and fixed the contrast and just for fun cropped my son-in-law, Colby, out of the frame and texted it back to her.

I immediately got this photo back. The truth is I love this boy.
I am so thankful that he is part of our family and I am so thankful for the way he loves Jenna. I really couldn't be a more proud father or father-in-law.
I love getting photos of me working and especially when I am in unconventional places. I got this photo from my friend Al Fowler. I was shooting Good News Singers performing on the plaza between the Benson and the McInteer building. This is always a difficult shot because the light is harsh. The crowd and the performers are a fair distance apart. I jumped up on the fountain between songs and shot about 8 frames and got down and out of the way. If you are going to put yourself in such a visible place you have to go at the right time and you have to go fast.

I love hearing Good News Singers and really any Chuck Hicks group. I enjoy Good News because I know Charlie Collins, Mallory Gowen, and Ryan Simpson.
It is a time to remember where you came from and be thankful. I have so much to be thankful for. Tonight, I am thankful for my Mom's Dad. I called him Grandaddy. I was the first grandson and grandchild for my Mom's parents. There is no doubt among my brothers that he loved us all, but clearly, I was the favorite. I don't know if I really remember this or I have just seen the photos and heard the story so often that I think I remember it. I was little, like still in diapers little and he would take me out to the gravel driveway and he would back his truck with the tailgate down into the big bushes on the property line and I would die laughing. I would say again and he would do it over and over. Every time we backed into the bush the dog would jump out of the back of the truck.

He always had cows but when I was little he bought a pony named Polly. She was white, I famously told my grandmothers best friend that Polly was as blue as snow. This photo is of my Grandaddy, me and Polly at Uncle Frank and Aunt Evelyn's house. Frank and Evelyn Drinkard were my grandparents best friends. I don't know why we were there. I don't know if we bought Polly from them or if we just went on a long ride. They probably lived about a mile and half from my grandparent's house.

All of this background brings me to the topic of Southern Gospel Music. My grandad would go to bed early on Saturday nights. He wouldn't go to sleep he just wanted to lay in bed and listen to the Southern Gospel Radio show that came on the radio. There were two windows in his bedroom and the windows would be up and a box fan would be in one of the windows pulling the cool evening air into the room making it cool enough that you needed to be under the covers. We would lay there together and listen to those wonderful gospel quartets. I don't remember him liking any specific songs or groups.

My granddad died the summer between 5th and 6th grade. He had chronic leukemia and he was in the hospital getting a blood transfusion and he had an allergic reaction to the blood and they didn't catch it in time and he died. I missed him terribly. I listened to a lot of country music in the years following and I stayed with the quartets like The Oak Ridge Boys and the Statler Brothers. I still loved the bass singers and spent a great deal of time trying to sing as low as Richard Sterban and Harold Reid.

When I was in college I found Southern Gospel Music again and it has been a part of my life since. Sadly, I am the only in my family that cares for that type of music. Julie and her family would go to Saturday night gospel concerts at the convention center as a kid but she still doesn't care for it today.

This memory with my Grandad was triggered when my brothers and I were helping my Dad move. We spent last spring break cleaning out his house getting it ready to sell. I found so many old photos that I had never seen before. I also found some of the old ceramics that my Mom used to make. It got me thinking about who I am. I have always known I was my Mom's kid because I am long waisted and have short legs like she did. But as I thought about it, my Mom was a huge Ray Walker fan. He would come and lead singing at the annual gathering of all the Churches of Christ in Memphis. The event was called Training for Service. Sunday night all the churches in Memphis would meet together in the Mid-South Coliseum. The rest of the nights we would meet for classes at Harding Academy. All the kids would go to the new gym and it would kind of be like a youth rally.
I think my Mom owned every Ray Walker cassette tape he ever sold.

So really, I come by my love for gospel music honestly. I am not as weird as my wife and kids think.
First thing this morning, I got a text asking if I could take a few photos of the light poles in Legacy Park so one of the graphic designers could proof out some new banners. I had a camera with me so no worries. I parked in front of a house at the west end of Legacy Park. When I got out of the car, I noticed a bed full of beautiful lantana. I shot the photos I needed and as I got back to the car I stopped and took some lantana photos. I had no idea who lived in that house. I just hoped if I got busted I could talk my way out of trouble by praising their garden.
Today, I did a quick sketch of one of my favorite photos of the Bell Tower at Harding. It took about 30 minutes. It is only 4X6 inches. I saw Botham last fall while in Dallas for a Harding Presidential Reception at the Dallas West Church of Christ. I reached out to shake his hand and he grabbed me and gave me a hug. It was a wonderful moment and day as we worshipped with the Dallas West Church and Botham led the singing.

This terrible tragedy leaves me with strong mixed emotions.

I want answers to why this happened, what was that officer thinking, why did she feel the need for deadly force? We have no answers to these questions as of yet and that just leads to speculation, rumors, and nonsense.

I want someone to blame and I find it hard to blame a law enforcement officer without appropriate evidence. I work with and know too many law enforcement officers and I have the highest respect for them and the job that they do.

My favorite memory of Botham involves singing. I really enjoy singing. I would love to be a great singer but the truth of the matter is I am barely average. I was at the Gospel Singing one night after Lectureship sitting in the back row and we were about sing Have a Little Talk With Jesus. As we started singing Botham came and slid into the seat beside me. I was singing bass and he was singing tenor. It made me nervous to be sitting beside such a talented singer. After we sang the last stanza, Botham leaned over and said "that bass line was sounding really good." That simple word of encouragement has stuck with me.

Botham graduated in May of 2016 at the same ceremony as my oldest daughter Jenna. I shot his graduation photo and I even got this candid shot as we sang the Alma Mater. As a photographer, you never know when the photos that you take will all of the sudden become so much more meaningful than just a simple candid of a friend at graduation.

I told my students of the power of photos in situations like this and I am thankful for the photos that I had and for others that shared photos with me. The photos are important, but they pale in comparison to the life of this Godly man. I thank God for Botham being my friend and I pray for peace for all of his family and friends.

My dad just sold his house and moved and I found this painting as we cleaned out his attic. It is a painting or Cox's Chapel Church of Christ in Coxville, Tennessee. The painting hung in my grandmother's apartment at the retirement home in Bells, Tennessee.

This oil painting was painted by, Olaf Berry, a man we went to church with when I was a kid. The Berrys were missioners somewhere when they were young. They moved to Memphis from Independence, MO to be close to their daughter Faye Adkins. We loved to go to the Berry's house for supper and to play cards. Mrs. Berry always had chocolate pies for dessert and there was always enough for us to have two pieces of pie. Dad and I cut the grass at the apartments where they lived and one spring Dad accidentally cut down Brother Berry's tomato plants with the weedeater. They always laughed about that.

Cox's Chapel was the church that my grandparents attended. It was a small country church with a cemetery in the back. The preacher was James Bradley and he preached on odd Sundays and on the even Sundays he preached for the Gadsden Church of Christ. On even Sundays at Cox's Chapel, they had Sunday school class and then singing and a communion service and no Sunday night Bible study. The church had two aisles and three section of seats. The pulpit was on a one-step tall platform and had a blackboard on the wall for the preacher to put up notes or announcements. Behind the auditorium, there were two small classrooms. There were several ceiling fans that were used to keep the air from the open windows stirring. In the winter there were gas heaters. The bathroom was an outhouse out at the edge of the gravel parking lot and not a place you wanted to go unless you were desperate.

I have so many memories of this church as a child. My favorite has to be all the times I would walk there with my grandad. It was exactly a mile to the church from my grandparent's house. After my grandad had a heart attack the doctor told him he needed to start walking and the church became the destination for those walks. I got to go with Grandaddy because I was the only one who could halfway keep up with him. My Grandad, Carl Cox, walked like a man on a mission and it was all I could do to keep up with him.

When we went to church we had assigned seats. We sat on the fourth pew from the back on the right side. My grandmother sat by the window and my grandad set on the other end by the aisle. I would always try to sit by my grandad. The pews were brown painted wood with a padded bench and not very comfortable. Uncle Mose sat in the pew in front of us and Uncle Reggie and Aunt Blanche sat behind us. Uncle Frank and Aunt Evelyn sat behind Uncle Reggie. Uncle Frank and Aunt Evelyn were my grandparents best friends and their last name was Drinkard. They had a son named Frankie and two daughters, Mary Jo and Pam. Other people I remember from Church were King and Dorthy Porter, and the kids Sunday School teacher was Mrs. Matalou McCord. I need to talk to my brothers and see if we can remember more names.

This was the church where my parents got married. I have some photos of that too but that is the topic for a different post.
Yesterday, I went to the memorial service for Janice Myers. I knew Janice in passing. Her middle daughter, Christy was in my high school class at Harding Academy in Memphis. Her husband, Edward, and I worked together for years at Harding University. I took wedding photos for her youngest daughter. So, since I was a junior in high school I would occasionally be around Janice. Actually, it feels weird typing her first name as I probably would have called her Mrs. Myers. I always remember her being a happy and friendly person. During the memorial service, multiple people mentioned how encouraging she was.

As I arrived at Cone Chapel for the memorial I saw Christy and I went over and gave her my condolences. We talked for just a minute and she said " Jeff, my mom loved your photography and she got so excited when you started posting watercolor paintings. " Christy went on to tell me that her mom loved to watercolor and they actually had brought one of her paintings to display. I had no idea that Janice Myers was a watercolor painter. I left Christy and went and sat down in the chapel and I had been encouraged. What a powerful thing to be encouraged by the women whose memorial service you are attending. Janice Myers had used her God-given gift of encouragement and had passed it on to her children who had passed it on to me.

Andrew Baker talks about making an "Eternal Difference." Janice Myers made a difference from eternity. I am motived to be more of an encourager than I ever have been before and I am thankful I got to celebrate the life of Janice Myers.Jeff's Photoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12331131127732641167noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9083114.post-24656330905625410922018-08-09T20:29:00.002-05:002018-08-09T20:29:41.129-05:00Jalen's Jr Year as a Wildcat

Back in the summer, I went to Michigan on a business trip and the last day we had several hours before we needed to be at the airport and we went to the Detroit Institute of Art. I love going to art museums and for the most part, my family is not so interested in art museums so this was a treat. I got a map and made a beeline to the photography area and sadly it was between shows and was closed. That was a bummer. I really did enjoy all the paintings and I took some photos of my favorites.

I have a new iMac and I am slowly getting used to it. I like the big Apple screen but I really miss the solid state hard drive that was in my old MacPro. That MacPro drive was only 500GB and the iMac is 2TB but I would take the speed back in a heartbeat. I love the wireless keyboard and I am slowly making friends with the new trackpad. I am so glad that the keyboard and trackpad both have rechargeable batteries. I also upgraded from a second generation Drobo to a Drobo 5D3 which uses Thunderbolt 3 instead of Firewire 800.

Another new thing that I am working through at the moment is Google Team Drives. I have not been a huge fan of Drive but I think it is just lack of use. I do like having all my photos online but that is still a work in progress as each year of digital photos is about 500GB and that takes a while to upload. It is funny how I am looking forward to back to the 12 MP era cameras so the uploads will go so much faster. In the last three hours, 6000 photos have uploaded. I really love using the file transfer app FromSmash.com. The only problem is it only keeps the uploads in the cloud for 7 days several times lately I have had to re-pull photos because people didn't download them in time. I hope Google Drive or Team Drives help with that.
Every summer since 1992, I have spent at least one day at Camp Tahkokah shooting photos. Josie is at camp this session and Jalen was at Camp last session. Camp Tahkodah has been a blessing to me and especially to my kids. I am really thankful for all the people that spend their summers out at camp investing in kids.
Jalen went to Camp with me and he wanted a camera. His photos were not half bad. "Not half bad" is code for really good. It comes from Statler and Waldorf, the grumpy old men muppets. One would say something "was not half bad" and the other one would respond "it was all bad."

Back over Christmas break while the boys were out of school and Jackson was recovering from ACL surgery Jalen used Sam's name to win an argument. The boys were fussing over something that really didn't matter and it eventually boiled down to Jalen saying at least my knee works and Jackson accusing Jalen of thinking he is tough because he has an Apple Watch and then said only sissies wear Apple Watches. I was watercoloring at the time and had had enough of their nonsense and said so you calling Coach Simmons (HU football coach) a sissy? It was a total bluff on my part as I have no idea what kind of watch Paul Simmons wears. Jackson looked at me for a moment and then bluffed back at me with " is Coach Simmons the toughest guy you know?" Jalen said, " I am pretty sure Sam Jeffrey is the toughest guy I know." Argument over.

I shot this photo on Friday with a Sony A7 mirrorless camera. I had the camera in my possession for about 45 minutes total so this is in no way a complete review. I was not a fan of the camera. I kind of felt like this butterfly with the chewed up wing, it could fly but it was not very pretty. I could take photos but it was not very smooth.

The menu system was not very clear or easy to get around in. I have been fluent for 16 years in Nikon menus and that is a huge bias. The lens I used was the 18-140 and it was capable. I was not a fan of electronic zooming but I am sure I could get used to it. The lens was not great at closeup work which I am sure there are better lenses for that. The camera seems to be strongly aimed at videographers and that is exactly who we bought the camera for. The thing I loved is how the monitor showed you the exposure as you changed settings. I feel like you would eventually stop using a meter as you learned to trust what you saw in the viewfinder. That to me is a major draw of these cameras. The fact that the cameras are small and light is a great advantage in my opinion. The viewfinder always looked somewhat unsharp to me as I got ready to take the photo but the playback of the image in the viewfinder showed sharp images. I constantly struggled with turning the exposure compensation button instead of the shutter speed button. I am sure with practice I would overcome that issue. I am sure with practice and maybe reading the instruction book I could become friends with the camera. I really do believe you have to become friends with your camera to get the most out of them.

I do own a Fuji X-100s which is a mirrorless camera. I love it and have used it for about 5 years. The S model is the second generation of the camera and it currently is in a fourth generation as an X-100F. Fuji has a new H-1 professional body that looks wonderful and I would dearly love to have one to use at the office but I am waiting.

I am waiting to see what Nikon is going to release this year. All of the rumor sites are saying there is going to be a professional Nikon mirrorless camera this year. I so dearly want it to use the same lens mount and be able to use the majority of my lenses. Please, Nikon, make this camera amazing and I so would love to be able to use my Nikon flashes as well.

Finally, my hat is off to people who write equipment reviews as this was way more difficult than I thought it would be even for such a limited review.Jeff's Photoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12331131127732641167noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9083114.post-24417639545371577822018-06-29T12:06:00.000-05:002018-06-29T12:07:03.708-05:00The Cat, Sunflower, Spider and Josie photos.

This year I have planted nothing. This sunflower came up from a seed from last years sunflowers. I liked the little green spider in the center.
The next three photos are from Josie. I may have rubbed off on her a little with the flower photos. The first thing she told me that she did was to take a stick and knock that spider off of the flower.
For the last four years, Abby Tran has worked for me as a student photographer and then for the last year, she has worked as a part-time university photographer. She has been the chief scanner, lighting model, co-teacher, head social media photographer, the fun person in the office and so many other things that I don't have time to mention.

Harding University Photo Services will be forever indebted to her for all the work scanning in the archives. The 100th anniversary will be a much easier task because of the work she has done.

Most importantly, she has been my friend and I am going to miss her.

Thank you, Abby.
