Photographing with Lucy

GeoTagged, [N34.96204, E89.95891]

We are in Southaven this weekend photographing the HU mens basketball team playing in the GSC tournament. Last night they upset CBU which is always sweet. This afternoon Jamie came in with her camera and said words I have never heard from one of my kids. "Hey Dad wanna go take some pictures?"
We went out and shot some of the flowering weeds in the yard. We have been working on using the macro mode and those weeds were the perfect subject. Who knows I may have a photographer on my hands.

Lucy, Camera Timeline, and a Decisive Moment

This is another small grouping from my last roll of film. Lucy is taking my picture as I am taking her picture. A very normal thing to do. She is using a very old 3MP Kodak camera. That was the third digital camera that the office bought. The first digital camera was a Kodak DC290 a 2MP p&s camera that we paid about $500 for and a 48MB CF Card that we paid $150 for in 2000. After the Kodak 290 we bought a 3 MP Nikon 990 because it had a manual exposure mode which was a big help in controlling exposure. After we bought the Nikon My boss started using the Kodak which he wore out shooting Optimist Club events. The Kodak no longer worked but Kodak offered a rebate to buy back a bunch of their cameras and they were paying $250 for the DC 290. I called and checked to see if it had to function and was told there were no conditions on taking the cameras back. So we traded the DC290 in for the Kodak DC 4800 and only had to pay $50. After the Nikon 990 we stepped up bigtime to a Nikon D1X in 2002. We later added a D100 and Then the awesome D2X and D2Xs.

Just as Lucy was about to take my photo Jackson put his hand in front of her lens and I got this decisive moment. You have to be thankful for motor drives. I was using my Canon T70 film camera so motor drive might be a stretch. Auto winder is more what that camera has since it operates at about a frame per second. I love the total look of disgust that she is giving Jackson. I feel the same way, it is never funny to put your hand in front of someones camera lens.
In this last picture, Lucy is giving Jackson the you better not mess with me because you will loose look. One of the reasons that I got this sequence is that I am staying with the subject and the action which is easier with a film camera because you can't chimp. The other reason that I got that sequence is that I am a highly trained professional- at least that is what I tell my boss when he asks how I got some cool photo. I often refer to Nick Kelsh and his three rules for great photography and rule three is shoot more photos. I would be out of line to not give credit for The Decisive Moment to Henri Cartier-Bresson.

Super Tuesday

Last Tuesday the Country divided democrats and republicans and voted and then watched CNN or Fox respectively as election returns came in from the Presidential Primaries in 17 states. Well in the Montgomery family we celebrated Super Tuesday for a much more important reason than who is going to run our country for four years. We were celebrating Jamie's 10th birthday. I can't believe Lucy is 10. I call Jamie-Lucy. I don't know why that name stuck with me for her. I am the only one who calls her that. Anyway, I got to eat lunch with her and she wanted Taco Bell. I left the office and arrived at Taco Bell to find it closed for remodeling. I got Snack Wraps @ McDonald's and made it to school for lunch. When we sat down at the table the entire lunch room sang Happy Birthday to her which was slightly mbarrassing to Jamie. After lunch we headed out to the playground and played 4 square for the entire time. We ate supper at Pizza Pro and she opened her presents and we ate cake. It was a Super Tuesday and when I got home late Tuesday night I joined the rest of the country watching Fox to check on the election returns.

Phone Photos

When you see Josie in her little bed all sweet and asleep with her Bible that she has been reading before she drifted peacefully off into dreamland you can almost make out the halo that must be above her little soft brown locks. Don't let that sweet look fool you. My iTunes is currently playing a Elvis tune from 1963 that is closer to the truth- (You're The) Devil In Disguise.

Lucy. I don't get many photos of Lucy and I kind of liked this one. You may be wondering who Lucy is and thinking this looks remarkable like Jamie. It is Jamie I just call her Lucy because sometimes it is nice to have a kids name that doesn't start with J and for whatever reason Lucy just works for me for Jamie.

This is not the greatest picture of Jalen but it really captures him. Jalen does everything at 110% and that even includes eating grits at Cracker Barrel in Arkadelphia, AR after HU beat Henderson in football a couple of weeks ago.

I never know what Josie will be up to when I get home from work. Thursday when I drove up the boys were playing basketball and Josie wearing a pink tutu and dark blue tights and pink tennis shoes was sitting in the middle of her hula hoop meditating. Where do 4 yr olds learn to meditate?
